How to support yourself
Norfolk and Suffolk Victim Care are here to help you. However, each of us is different and we all manage and process changes and challenges in our own ways and we appreciate that. There are lots of self-help resources available online but here are some ways to address a victim mentality and promote personal growth.
My Support Space
You can create a free account on My Support Space – an online resource from Victim Support containing interactive guides to help you manage the impact crime has had on you.
Change Your Perspective:
Replace the “you” with “I” in your thoughts and language.
See yourself as a survivor rather than a victim of crime.
Practice self-compassion and show kindness to yourself and others.
Challenge Your Beliefs:
Explore the mistaken beliefs that contribute to victimisation. This is not your fault.
Ask yourself, “What thought is creating this suffering?”
Don’t blame yourself.
Take Responsibility:
Take personal accountability in your own life.
Seek solutions and consider small actions for improvement.
Express Thanks:
Practice gratitude to try and move the focus away from negativity.
Perform Acts of Kindness:
Extend kindness to others, fostering a positive mindset.
Remember, overcoming victim mentality involves self-reflection, compassion, and a willingness to change.
Through our main Victim Support website there is access to our My Support Space online support, where you can access a range of tools to help you cope and move forwards after crime. This is a free, safe, secure and confidential space where you can choose how you want to be supported after crime. Please see the link here.
