Online safety

Definition: Online safety is about protecting yourself and others while using the internet and digital technology. It involves managing your personal information, using social media responsibly, and recognising and avoiding online threats like cyberbullying and scams.

Actions to consider

When you are a victim of cyberbullying, you should:

  • Not retaliate by responding to the bully’s messages or posts.
  • Save evidence by taking screenshots of messages, posts, or images, as this evidence is crucial if you decide to report the incident.
  • Block the bully by using the block or report features on the platform where the bullying is occurring to stop further contact.
  • Report it to the platform by using the platform’s own reporting tools to flag the content or user for violating their terms of service.

If you have been targeted by a scam, it’s important to:

  • Stop all communication and avoid responding to suspicious emails, texts, or calls.
  • Contact your bank immediately if you have shared financial details or lost money, using the official number on the back of your card or on their website, not a number provided by the scammer.
  • Report the scam to Action Fraud online or by calling 0300 123 2040
